Healing in Hebden, Manchester and Leeds: the Solar Plexus Chakra

By Fiona Cutts | Published: November 14, 2011

Hello from the rain of West Yorkshire! – I can only just see the hill opposite as I write this post!

So, this week we are moving into the third chakra, the Solar Plexus. This chakra is very much about individuation, and our place in the world. When we are balanced in this chakra, this manifests as being connected with others, without losing ourselves in the other, and remaining aware of our ultimate aloneness.

The Solar Plexus chakra is situated just below the ribs, and is related to the organs to do with digestion – the liver, the stomach, and the pancreas. Conditions that are often related to a third chakra imbalance are digestive issues, allergies, crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome and diabetes.

When we are imbalanced in this chakra, we can often feel as though we are victims in our own lives, powerless to change our situation and stuck. (I think this emotional stuckness is often reflected in the physical stuckness of elimination which can lead to the diseases talked about earlier to do with digestion.) The root emotion below all of this is often unexpressed anger. As well as manifesting in terms of powerlessness (which is associated with a deficiency in this chakra) it can also manifest as an excess: being power hungry, aggressive and controlling others.

The balanced position in this chakra is one where we have a healthy, balanced sense of our own worth, we are confident in ourselves and our abilities, we are disciplined, without it veering into over control, and we can be spontaneous and playful.

In terms of healing this chakra, it is often my sense that it is about bringing movement to the stagnant, stuck energy. Shaking and free form dancing are very good for this; other exercise such as running or swimming is also good, but there is something about the unpredictability and spontaneity of shaking and free-form dancing that I feel is particularly good here.

A physical cleanse can also be good. I remember doing a 5 day blessd herbs cleanse, which involved drinking herbal “shakes” 4 or 5 times a day, and not eating. I felt afterwards physically lighter – as though the cleanse had allowed me to release a “layer” of negativity that I had been carrying round with me. (If you’re interested in this, it’s good to talk with the suppliers of this product before using it, particularly if you have an existing health condition.)

Energy healing and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can also be helpful here. Sound healing, chakra balancing and colour healing can help to balance the Solar Plexus chakra. More specifically, an inner child healing or a relationship cord healing can help the person heal the event or events which led to the imbalance in this chakra. Often, this will be the time from 18 months to 4 years (including the terrible twos!) – when the child is starting to feel separate from  the mother, and yet needs the assurance that she is still there. Often, the child can feel the parents’ will imposed on him; this can lead to unexpressed anger. An inner child healing can be a safe place to express what it wasn’t possible to express at the time.

Similarly, EFT is very helpful for going back to a childhood event that remains in the energy field, and is influencing our behaviour still, and letting go of it.

Finally, as with the other chakras, chakra balancing mediations are helpful. The balanced colour of the Solar Plexus chakra is a bright yellow. And the balanced sound is “OOOH.”

So, the next post will move into the territory of the heart chakra – the bridge between the lower three chakras we have already looked at, and the higher three chakras (throat, third eye and crown.)

Healing in Hebden, Manchester and Leeds: the Sacral Chakra

By Fiona Cutts | Published: November 7, 2011

Fiona hugging a treeHello again! Now it is time to continue the journey through the chakras, and look at the sacral chakra.

The sacral chakra is located just below the belly button, and is associated with creativity and sexuality, and is to do with our appetite for both food and sex. When we are balanced here, we are in touch with our emotions, and are open to receiving and giving pleasure.

In her excellent book, “Eastern Body, Western Mind”, Anodea Judith talks about how as a society we are out of touch with our sexuality: sexuality is simultaneously magnified and yet at the same time rejected.  So, healing the sacral chakra is about reclaiming our right to feel, and to be in touch with those feelings.

The sacral chakra governs the sexual and reproductive organs, the spleen, and the urinary system. Imbalances in this chakra can lead to disorders of the reproductive system, any kind of menstrual difficulties or menopausal symptoms,  sexual dysfunction, and loss of appetite – for food, for sex or ultimately for life.

Balance in this chakra is exhibited in being in touch with emotions and able to express them, healthy boundaries, experiencing pleasure and graceful movement.

Healing the imbalances associated with this chakra is to do with learning to get in touch with feelings in a healthy way, and learning to be in touch with pleasure (in a healthy way.) Affirmations that are helpful here are to do with deserving pleasure, being in touch with feelings and expressing them and enjoying life.

The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) can be very good for getting in touch with the emotional tone related to an experience. I have just seen time and time again with clients how working with the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) on an issue whilst talking about it leads to getting in touch with the underlying emotions, and releasing them.

Energy healing is also useful in a general sense for similar reasons. Talking about an emotional issue in the case taking, and then receiving hands on healing can lead to getting in touch with emotions, and releasing them. I have noticed as well that the process of receiving energy healing and practising the Emotional freedom technique (EFT), either alone or with a therapist, leads to an increased ability to  be aware of emotions, and fully feel them.

Specific types of emotional healing can also be helpful. An inner child healing, a past life healing or a relationship cord healing can go back to the original wounding and release the energy associated with it, leading to deep healing.

Other practices which I believe can be very helpful here are tantra and free dance practices such as five rhythms or biodanza. Tantra is a spiritual path that celebrates life and believes that all of life, including sexuality, is part of spiritual life. As such, it helps to foster a healthy, balanced attitude towards sex, and to reclaim our right to pleasure (in life generally as well as in a healthy sex life.)

Similarly, both biodanza and 5 rhythms dance encourage being in touch with emotions, and dancing them to different types of music – both on our own, and with partners.

Finally, as with the other chakras, the different kinds of chakra meditations I talked about in the post on the overview of the chakras can be very healing. The healthy balanced colour connected with the sacral chakra is a deep orange, and the balanced sound is “OH.”

That’s all for the second chakra – next time I shall be taking a look at the Solar Plexus, the third chakra – to do with our sense of self, and our place in the world.

Healing in Hebden, Manchester and Leeds: the base chakra part 2

By Fiona Cutts | Published: November 2, 2011

Hello again! So, I am writing about the base chakra again. Last time, I wrote about the properties of a balanced base chakra, and also about the types of issues and conditions that can occur when the base chakra is out of balance. This time, I would  like to write about how to balance and heal the base chakra.

Healing the base chakra means re-establishing a healthy connection with the earth. Being outside, walking barefoot on the earth, gardening (or even looking after indoor plants, particularly if it involves touching the soil they are growing in), chi kung, tai chi, yoga, swimming, dancing, shaking the body, tree hugging, and receiving massage are all very useful for rebalancing the base chakra. Affirmations that may help are to do with affirming that it is safe to be here, and that the earth and universe support and nourish me.

I know that I can have a tendency to disconnect from my roots; conversely I know how nurturing the feeling of heavy, solid, “safe” earth energy flowing in my body can be. When I was first at the School of Energy Healing, and learned chi kung, I used to stand in the basic grounding posture of wu chi for 40 or 50 minutes every morning. I intuitively knew on some level that I needed to invite in as much earth energy as I could, and re-establish that healthy connection with the earth that I had somehow lost. I am sure this contributed hugely to my recovery from chronic fatigue syndrome (M.E.)

Similarly, since I have been here in Hebden Bridge, I have really felt the need to connect with the land round here, in order to literally “root” myself in my new environment. I have been outside a lot, which has been great, but I have needed to actually get my feet on the earth. Fortunately so far it has been good weather and comparatively mild – but it feels so good I intend to carry on doing it even in the winter!

Energy healing and reiki can be very good for grounding, and bringing someone energetically back into their body; at its most basic level energy healing and reiki are about loving touch, and that can create the feeling of safety and nurturing that someone needs to fully inhabit their body energetically.

Energy Healing and the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) also have a lot to offer in terms of  healing the issue that led to the lack of grounding in the first place. Typically, this is very early on in an infant’s development, from in the womb to one year old. It’s also possible that there are inherited fears to do with survival that have been passed on from generation to generation (eg to do with the holocaust, famines or other disasters) which energy healing and / or EFT can also help to heal. So, an inner child healing, a relationship cord healing or a past life healing can be powerful in these situations (follow the links to see where I have written about these types of healings.)

Colour healing and sound healing can also work on balancing each chakra. For the base chakra, the balanced colour is a deep red and the balanced sound is a deep “OH” that comes from the base of the spine. As a healer, I hold the balanced vibration of either the sound or the colour (or sometimes both) which invites the client’s chakra to come into a balanced place.

This brings to an end the discussion of the base chakra; next I will look at the sacral chakra, which is mainly to do with issues of creativity and sexuality.

Healing in Hebden, Manchester and Leeds: the Base Chakra Part 1

By Fiona Cutts | Published: November 2, 2011

Fiona with green plant backgroundHaving just moved out to Hebden Bridge, the issues that are to do with the base chakra are very current for me. Even though I really wanted to move out here, and I love it here, I have been feeling very “wobbly” and ungrounded – unsurprising in that I have literally “uprooted” myself and all my possessions!

Maybe because it’s current for me, I’ve realised there’s a lot to say about this chakra, so this first post will give a description of the base chakra, and the kind of conditions it is associated with. The next post will then look at activities and practices that can heal and balance the base chakra, and how energy healing, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and reiki can help that process.

The base chakra is located at the base of the spine, and governs the spinal column and the kidneys. It is here that we hold our issues around survival; if we are strong in this chakra, we will step forward in life with confidence and ease, certain that the earth and the universe will provide for us.

When we are strong in this chakra, we create a flourishing, nurturing home, we manage our finances with ease, we love and respect our bodies and look after them, and we function well in the world.

People who are weak in this chakra are often very talented, maybe even brilliant, and yet they will find it hard to manifest in line with their talents. They tend to feel a lot of fear; this may manifest in their lives in many different ways, but at its root is often a fear of really being fully alive.

Our society, with its emphasis on the mind and intellectual ability and achievement, and our general dislocation from the land and the earth, leads to a lot of us being disconnected from our roots, and out of touch with our body and its wisdom.

The type of illnesses and conditions that can be associated with an imbalance in the base chakra are: anorexia nervosa (a classic illness of not really wanting to be here), depression, food addictions (often food, particularly heavy food can be used unconsciously to make the person feel more grounded and more “here”), constipation and other issues to do with elimination such as Crohn’s disease, diarrhoea or piles, lower back pain, sciatica, and issues with the hands, feet and legs.

I also think that having a depleted base chakra can be part of many chronic illnesses. I know myself that it was part of what I worked on in my healing journey to do with chronic fatigue syndrome (M.E.). All the years of using my brain a lot in analytical and computing work (academia and accounting) meant that my energy was very high in my body, away from my base chakra. I also think that my meditation practice led to a strong connection with the divine in my higher chakras, but sometimes at the expense of being really rooted in this world (and in a way this is unsurprising – I was struggling so much with my physical life that it was more enjoyable being connected to the heavens!)

Please note that I am not saying there is anything wrong with “brain” work or meditation. It is more that my approach to them at the time was not balanced. It is certainly possible to integrate computer and academic work in a balanced life that includes body awareness practices. Similarly, many meditation teachers emphasise the necessity of meditation practice being “embodied”. In this respect, I have found   chakra balancing and chakra toning meditations really helpful, as they automatically bring the focus down in the body when working on the lower chakras.

That’s an overview of the base chakra, and the conditions associated with it. The next post will focus more on how we can heal the base chakra, including how energy healing, the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) and reiki can help with that.

Healing in Hebden, Manchester and Leeds: An Overview of the Chakras

By Fiona Cutts | Published: October 28, 2011

Good Morning from the autumnal sunshine of the Pennines! As I said last week, I am intending to write a series of posts about energetic anatomy in relation to energy healing. I started to write about the base chakra, and then realised that it would be a good idea to begin with an overview of the chakra system, and working with the chakras in an energy healing session.

The word “chakra” is a Sanskrit (ancient Indian language) word which means wheel, or vortex. Chakras are often described as whirling vortexes of energy. Original knowledge of the chakras most likely relates back more than 4000 years and is part of the ancient Indian healing system known as Ayurveda.  There are many chakras in the body; the major ones, and the ones people typically talk about, are located from the base of the spine to the crown.

Each chakra is associated with a particular life issue, and chakras are said to hold the energetic imprint of life experiences relating to that chakra’s issues.  (I will talk about this in the forthcoming blog posts – examples include security, sexuality, individuation, transcendence.) As an energy healer, I am able to “tune in” to the energy of a client’s chakras, and help the client to balance them. This energetic balancing leads to healing on the physical level.

This can happen in many different ways within energy healing. Some healings focus directly on balancing chakra energy: for example chakra balancing (which works on both sides of the body to balance the front and back of the chakras) or chakra restructuring – which literally repairs damaged parts of the chakra.

Each chakra also has a balanced vibration; healing with the balanced sound vibration or the balanced colour vibration of that chakra encourages the chakra to come into balance. (See my post on sound healing for more information about sound healing.) There are also meditations which can be done on your own to clear blockages in the chakras, and balance them: chakra breathing, chakra balancing, colour breathing and chakra toning meditations.

Finally, chakras can also be balanced by working with healings such as the Inner Child healing, past life healing or relationship cord healing to address issues or traumas held in particular chakras. Healing those traumas through energy healing or the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) balances the chakras and leads to resolution of physical conditions.

One final thing I would like to say in this introduction to healing through the chakras is that whilst it is true that certain issues tend to be held in particular chakras, and can be healed through working on one specific area, in reality the chakras are interconnected. It is most likely that one particular issue may be held in several chakras. Working on one chakra to release something can also have a positive effect on the balance in another chakra.

That’s the introduction to the chakras – I shall now be writing a series of posts on each of the chakras, starting with the base chakra.
